NEW MEXICO INVENTIONINDEX | APRIL 2025
April 2025: 1.35% (B+ grade)
New Mexico inventionINDEX April 2025: 1.35% (B+ grade)
The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.
Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).
Over the past six months, the New Mexico inventionINDEX Score has demonstrated a series of fluctuations, reflecting both positive and negative trends in innovation activity. In April 2025, the score stands at 1.35%, slightly higher than the previous month’s 1.20%, and showing a consistent average within a range seen over the last half-year. The lowest point in the period occurred in June 2024, with a score of 1.14%, suggesting a brief decline in invention and innovation activities in the region.
The positive implications of a higher score, such as the 1.69% seen in July 2024, are significant. Higher scores generally indicate a robust environment for invention, research, and technological development. These outcomes typically signal an increase in patent applications, academic research initiatives, and entrepreneurial activities. A higher inventionINDEX score can attract investors, encourage partnerships between businesses and universities, and foster job creation in research and development sectors.
On the other hand, a lower score, like the one recorded in June 2024 (1.14%), could point to a slowdown in these activities. This decline may reflect challenges in the innovation ecosystem, such as reduced funding, limited collaboration opportunities, or fewer breakthroughs in local industries. Such a score can indicate decreased competitiveness in the global marketplace, as regions with lower innovation scores may fall behind in attracting talent and capital.
In conclusion, New Mexico’s recent inventionINDEX scores present a mixed picture. While the positive trends indicate growth in innovation, there is a clear need for sustained efforts to maintain momentum and address the potential obstacles hindering growth during periods of lower performance.

Discussion:
In April, the New Mexico inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was higher than the previous year’s average and outperformed the downward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced a downward trend.
As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.
