New York Patent of the Month – April 2021

Spy movies always have some level of biometric security using iris detection. These systems create an “iris code” based on the details of the accepted iris. This system is truthfully a great security method as there are very low false acceptance rates associated. There are known cases of high quality iris images being printed on contact lenses and breaching security. EyeLock, LLC have designed a biometric system that can combat these limitations.

Their biometric matching evaluates the “liveness” of the iris through two images. The first image is acquired when the eye is in a state of pupillary constriction, and the second when your pupils are not constricted. This constriction response is instigated using a light source for the first image, and then removing that light source for the second. The two images are then normalized and compared against each other as well as to the reference password image. If the difference between the two images surpasses a threshold, the user is not deemed live and not a match. The constriction response can cause exposure of the fraudsters real iris as it becomes uncovered by the contact lenses fake iris. Requiring liveness detection over an iris code enhances security extensively.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
