New York Patent of the Month – September 2021

Jewelry is a worldwide form of expression, depicting your own personal style or the love between you and your partner. We see necklaces, rings, and bracelets used to bring an outfit together or passed down as family heirlooms. It’s pretty clear jewelry holds a special place in our society, so it’s no surprise that the creation of jewelry has complex processes. H.K. Designs, Inc has been pioneering this innovation for a full decade. Recently, they have been developing a stone setting that makes the mounted stone appear even larger.

While this design is made with diamonds in mind, any precious stone could be used in place. Previous stone settings have been unable to achieve this “enlarging” effect since the lights reflecting off the metallic setting discs highlight the edges of the stone, making it clear how big the stone really is. H.K. Designs has taken this limitation into consideration and created a novel stone setting to overcome it. The setting body engages and holds the stone with a faceted plate on the setting body. The plate has an upward facing reflecting surface which extends below the precious stone. It has a surface capable of reflecting light that comes out from the pavilion (the bottom half of the gemstone). The plate’s upper surface has an inclined angle. The combination of the angle and the reflective capabilities scatters the light in such a way that the rock appears larger than it is. Rather than highlighting the edges of the diamond, it creates a visual illusion of increased size and produces an overall aesthetically pleasing stone setting.
