North Carolina Patent of the Month – August 2024
Corvid Technologies LLC, a North Carolina-based engineering firm, has developed an innovative method for environmental sensing using a sensor-equipped aerial vehicle and steerable projectiles. This system, designed for precision, enables an aerial vehicle to release a projectile that relies solely on gravity to reach its target. Equipped with an onboard environmental sensor, the projectile is guided to its destination through a steering mechanism that adjusts its flight path, ensuring it reaches the desired location.
Once deployed, the projectile’s sensors gather data on various environmental conditions such as air composition, temperature, vibrations, or soil quality. The data can be recorded directly on the projectile or transmitted in real-time to the base system for further analysis. This cutting-edge technology enables the collection of critical environmental data from hard-to-reach areas, without the need for onboard propulsion systems or GPS, making it both efficient and adaptable.
This system’s flexibility allows operators to guide the projectile within specific boundaries, avoiding restricted zones or redirecting it in case of an abort command. By leveraging simple yet effective communication between the base system and the projectile, Corvid’s invention offers a novel, cost-effective way to conduct environmental sensing in diverse fields such as agriculture, disaster response, and military operations, where real-time data collection is crucial for informed decision-making.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
