North Carolina Patent of the Month – December 2022

Stationary bikes, stair climbers, and treadmills all try to replicate natural body movements and day-to-day exercise. These options allow the average person to get in shape indoors, away from bad weather and in a safe environment. Drip Fitness, LLC is all about bringing fitness to the everyday person. In line with this mission, the company has designed a climbing device, offering a full body workout from a single machine.

Other attempts at climbing machines use chains to drive the handles and foot pedals. These chains need frequent maintenance and repair. Drip Fitness’ design is more modular and adaptable, allowing the inclination to be adjusted based on the climber’s height. Rather than chains that move the hand rests and foot rests up and down, the system uses hand and foot pedals. The pedals are driven by a belt rather than chains, removing the need for oiling and reducing the amount of maintenance needed.

The patent outlines the potential for joining the climbing machine with VR technology and virtual classes to build a sense of community and motivate users to exercise. From entering into a virtual rock climbing environment to joining others in exercise from the comfort of their own home.
