North Carolina Patent of the Month – May 2022

Birds can be a threat to airports and a nuisance to residential areas. BirdbrAIn, Inc. has designed a pest control and bird deterrent system that relies on drones. These unmanned vehicles make it possible to deter birds in a way that is safe for both people and birds.

Powered by AI, BirdbrAIn has developed the first fully autonomous pest control system. While some other drone-based pest control systems have been developed, they are user-controlled and rely on human assistance to detect, identify, and deter birds. Motion sensor triggers can kick the drone into gear at which point their AI identifies any birds and approaches them. By entering the bird’s “danger zone”, they are kicked into fight or flight and – as birds do – will fly away.

Even if the bird does choose fight over flight, the drone is equipped with self defense mechanisms to ensure neither the bird nor the drone is harmed. In either instance, once deterred, the drone returns to base to be recharged and continue monitoring. Since it is autonomous, the system can run 24/7 without needing someone to monitor the system at all times.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
