North Carolina Patent of the Month – September 2021

Insulin is a life saving drug which helps individuals with diabetes mellitus moderate their blood glucose levels. This disease removes the individual’s inherent ability to appropriately  produce insulin – a hormone naturally secreted by the pancreas. Instead, they must inject insulin or use an insulin pump. Manufacturers of insulin know the difficulty in obtaining a stable shelf life as insulin is known to degrade during storage.  The degradation results in lost potency and can harm the patient by delivering the incorrect dose. Aerami Therapeutics, Inc. has been formulating their own insulin medication and have created a liquid insulin formula which does not use preservatives or stabilizers.

Their liquid insulin formulation is successfully stable without the use of preservatives or stabilizers. This is a great feature as preservatives and stabilizers can be a source of irritation, ultimately impairing dose delivery. Thanks to this non-preservative approach, they can also change the dose delivery method. Rather than injecting the insulin, their liquid insulin can be aerosolized and inhaled – another advantage as it makes delivery of insulin even easier. Aerami Therapeutics has experience in inhaled therapies, as they formulate medications for use in their proprietary inhalation device. This insulin formulation has been working its way through their pipeline, ready to advance to Phase 3 of trials, an exciting next step.
