North Dakota Patent of the Month – February 2021

Fluid meter dispensing might sound boring, but when I tell you it affects a wide variety of applications, from your drinks to the gas you put in your car, it might sound a bit more interesting. Fluid dispensing is also very important in the oil and gas industry. For example, salt can build up in the pipes and in order to solve this, the appropriate amount of fresh water needs to be pumped in to rebalance the concentration of salt in the water. Sometimes, the well requires corrosion inhibitors, so fluid and chemicals need to be added into the oil well. It’s important to know the correct volume that is being injected, but traditional meters are not as accurate as they should be, especially since there can be numerous injection ports and various injections within a cycle. FlowCore Systems, LLC has developed a continuous fluid metering system to measure fluid more accurately.

FlowCore Systems’s fluid metering system consists of a separate fluid containment tank. This is the fluid that will be injected at different injection points. It also includes two different measuring tubes that are attached to the tank and the well that will accurately measure the fluid being injected. Valves are attached at the end of the measuring tubes to carefully inject fluid into the well. The valves are in communication with a control unit, which controls the operation of the valves. The control unit is able to measure the fluid that is injected over the course of multiple cycles for accurate fluid measurement.

Are you adapting existing technology for a new application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
