North Dakota Patent of the Month – February 2022

Levees are embankments used to prevent a river from overflowing. They’ve been used for many, many years and so levee repair systems have been evolving alongside them. While cutoff walls are often used to reinforce the levee, they may lack efficiency if the material is too porous. Levee Lock, LLC has worked to be poised to become the new industry standard in levee remediation, pollution control, agricultural waste containment, and underground security reinforcement. Recently, they have expanded their technologies by developing a membrane-lined wall.

This membrane-lined wall overcomes the porosity issue seen in traditional cutoff walls. The addition of the membrane means the wall can effectively prevent leaks. The wall is made of a cement or concrete material lined with a membrane. It’s created by excavating a trench in the earth, where a liner is then installed and runs continuously along each side and the bottom. This means there is no seam from one side to the other. The liner is actually two layers of a low-permeability geomembrane. The cement is then poured into the trench and allowed to set in place. The membrane prevents water permeation but also prevents soil from contaminating the concrete pour so that the set concrete is as structurally sound as possible. By adding this membrane layer to the levee, the system is much more secure and capable of preventing leaks of all kinds.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
