North Dakota Patent of the Month – May 2022

Tilling and turning your soil is an excellent practice to set up a defense against weeds and insects that may damage plants. By turning the soil, it fluffs up with air but will eventually be settled down by rain or time. In some designs, a rolling basket trails the tilling tool and firms up the soil by breaking clods of dirt as they are churned up. Summers Manufacturing Company, Inc. has taken this design further, adding a scraper to the rolling basket.

Conventional rolling baskets are prone to getting plugged up in muddy conditions, rendering them unusable. The addition of a scraper along the inside of the rolling basket disrupts the flow of mud, preventing it from pushing into the center of the basket. The blade itself remains stationary and parallel to the tiller. The rolling basket rotates as usual, so that the blade cuts up mud as it enters the basket.

Founded in 1965, Summers Manufacturing has decades of experience in developing innovative tools for the agricultural landscape. They pride themselves on their designs being farm tough, so the only tools they create are field tested tough.
