North Dakota Patent of the Month – October 2021

Botlink, LLC are drone enthusiasts who are working to integrate drones within a variety of industries, including agriculture, mining, roofing, and public safety. With drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) becoming increasingly popular, there are some valid concerns regarding how to ensure a UAV can be prevented from operating in restricted areas. For instance, some areas – such as military bases – may have “no flight” restrictions. UAVs are required to be up to date and aware of airspace restrictions and ensure they don’t operate within these restricted areas. Unfortunately, the systems in place for this are error prone.

Since Botlink is so invested in integrating UAVs into daily life, they have spent some R&D hours creating a system to effectively and accurately prevent UAVs from accessing restricted areas. This intrusion prevention system uses a restricted area data aggregator which collects and stores restricted area data. A UAV controller is designed to communicate with both the UAV and the aggregator. It pulls the positional data from the UAV and compares it against the restricted data to determine if it is currently intruding within a restricted area or if it is in danger of entering a restricted area. If the UAV is, in fact, in or about to enter a restricted area, the UAV can be deterred or turned away.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
