Ohio Patent of the Month – July 2021
Eye drops are a common administration method for delivering medicine or moisture to the eyes. These eye drops must have preservatives to prevent bacterial growth in the bottle. Some eye dropper designs include preservative removal devices to strip the preservative during administration, however these are often overly complex. TearClear Corp has designed a better preservative removal eye drop bottle.
The device is designed similarly to a traditional eye drop bottle, with a nozzle and a squeeze bottle. A porous material is included within the squeeze bottle tip and filters out preservatives. In addition, it has a flow diverter which directs a flow path from an inlet to an outlet. This flow diverter increases the path for the fluid to travel, limiting the flow between inlet and outlet when not in use. An increased path length also increases diffusion time for molecules of a preservative which, thanks to a diffusion gradient, makes it capable of blocking the preservative from reaching the outlet for the working lifetime of the bottle. This system enhances the preservative removal without overcomplicating the design. With a simple solution, TearClear Corp can easily integrate this preservative removal device into the industry.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
