Ohio Patent of the Month – July 2022
Particle therapy uses ionizing radiation delivered in beams of particles for treatment of various diseases including cancer. The radiation destroys the DNA and other important components of diseased cells to prevent their replication. The treatment plans must consider how to most effectively target the diseased tissue while sparing the healthy tissue. Up until now, the treatment plan often uses X-Ray computed tomography (CT) data to evaluate the patient’s body.
ViewRay Technologies, Inc. has targeted particle therapy, developing solutions that improve the treatment’s performance. Part of this improvement includes the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data to more accurately determine a radiation therapy treatment plan. The MRI data can account for the interaction properties of soft tissues through which the particle beam passes.
The MRI data can be collected during treatment as well to allow for real-time calculations of the optimal location to deposit the treatment dose. These real-time calculations consider the biological effectiveness of dose delivered to the soft tissues by the particle beam. As these calculations come in, the treatment can be modified and re-optimized to create the most effective treatment possible. Improved targeting precision means higher and potentially more effective radiation doses.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
