Distressed denim is a fashion style that comes and goes, which means denim manufacturers regularly need to include methods to create this “worn” look on brand new denim fabrics. Some standard methods use an enzyme wash with agitation elements (like rocks) to remove color and create the “stonewashed” look. An alternative uses ring spun denim, which is the creation of denim with already imperfect fabric. This creates a vintage look. These options are both more time and cost consuming. RevoLaze, LLC has developed a laser-based method that aims to overcome these limitations.
Their system generates a pattern using laser irradiation and a pattern generating device. The pattern generator can connect to different softwares like photoshop, to transfer the image onto the fabric surface. This gives the opportunity for complete customization. The pattern generator can recreate stonewashed or ring spun patterns with less time and cost. The pattern is then transferred with laser irradiation, adjusting beam size and intensity based on the pattern. The laser works to remove dye from the fabric. The strength of dye removal can be altered to change the intensity of distressing. The laser is also able to cut the fabric using an abrasion technique, successfully creating the worn feel and look. The laser can additionally leave marks to indicate where the fabric needs to be cut and sewn together. This system offers the benefits of distressing denim while removing the expensive and time-consuming processes, really providing the best of both worlds.
