Ohio Patent of the Month – March 2021

YSI, Inc. works with industry and government professionals to provide monitoring and sampling solutions for process improvement and to protect our planet’s natural resources. They design a variety of equipment and tools for use in water analysis. Foul build up is a common issue for anything that regularly sits below water level. YSI has designed an antifouling accessory to help minimize this build up.

The biofilms which coat the sensors and instruments create favorable conditions for growth of organisms like barnacles. They can build up on sensors and severely damage equipment. Some methods of antifouling involve UV irradiation or copper wrappings. Each of these limits the site selections as they require either a power source or are single use measures. YSI has developed a solution which does not limit site selection. Their design uses a copper housing container to cover the sensor. The sensor is situated within a sensor body so that it may proceed to take required measurements. The microorganisms are no longer capable of building up directly on the sensors and are easily removed from the cover. This design allows reusability and quick installation across any site selected.

Are you developing new technology? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
