Oklahoma Patent of the Month – April 2025

Momentum AI has patented a new system that uses machine learning to interpret sound vibrations during fracking. The invention, described in U.S. Patent No. 12287444, titled “Spectral analysis, machine learning, and frac score assignment to acoustic signatures of fracking events,” helps energy companies optimize operations while reducing risks.

Smarter Monitoring with Sound

The system captures acoustic signals produced when fluid is injected underground. These signals are then converted into electrical data. A machine learning model quickly analyzes them to assess the quality of the fracture.

Unlike traditional methods, this tool works in real time. As a result, operators can adjust techniques immediately. This improves safety, efficiency, and environmental control.

Real-Time Insights in the Field

Importantly, the system offers a “frac score” to rate the effectiveness of each event. This score is based on patterns learned from previous operations. It gives teams clear and fast feedback.

Because of this, operators can reduce wasted effort and better manage the fracking process. Additionally, the system supports more sustainable energy production by preventing overuse of resources.

Momentum AI’s approach blends artificial intelligence with energy extraction. It shows how advanced R&D can deliver measurable improvements in legacy industries.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
