Oklahoma Patent of the Month – July 2022

While virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) have made advancements using full size VR headsets, the next step for integrating into our day to day lives is the incorporation into daily eyewear. These Near-Eye Displays need to allow for see-through vision so as not to obstruct the view of the outside world while also offering a virtual overlay. This is no easy feat, as the technology must consider vision correction, brightness, field of view and more.

Raytrx, LLC has tackled these uncertainties, developing a wearable pupil-forming display device. Pupil forming architectures are used when the optical train needs to conform to the users’ head shape in a wrap-around format. In this device, the lenses are clear, allowing for the user’s eyes to be seen clearly. Optical technology provides an overlaid virtual image.

In order to conform to user’s heads, the device is set up for separate displays from a left-eye optical system and a right-eye optical system. The lenses have a curved reflective surface to show the generated 2D imagery. A beam splitter reflects this light and imagery to the lenses. The two separate beams are then optically combined to form 3D imagery at the correct focal distance. This design can be more readily implemented in day-to-day wear, advancing the AR and VR industry’s applicability.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
