Oklahoma Patent of the Month – September 2022

Playing games on virtual reality (VR) systems can be a fun and entertaining event for the entire family. The player is required to wear a head-mounted display (HMD) to immerse themselves in the VR environment, which can unfortunately limit the player’s movements. Since the player’s view is obstructed, it is difficult to walk or run as this could cause an accident. While conventional methods to solve this issue involve the use of treadmills, this presents space constraints as they are not practical to use in the home. In addition, the player cannot turn left or right using this method.

Human Mode, LLC is a technology company that intends to provide advancements in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, and VR. They aim to make VR simulations convenient, easy, exceptionally enjoyable and entertaining for everyone. Their softwares strives to bridge the real world with the avatar’s world.

Their latest patented development involves a mobility simulation device that is similar to a small elliptical. It is made up of supportive structures, durable framing, and springs to allow players to jump, walk, and run. The players can seamlessly rotate the device during gameplay to walk and run in all directions. It contains an inertial measurement unit (IMU) that tracks acceleration, orientation, and angular rates of the player and transmits this data to a central processing unit that applies these movements to characters and objects in the game. Its sleek design, lightweight material, small size, and ability to allow players to move freely makes this an ideal investment for all VR-gaming enthusiasts.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
