Oregon Patent of the Month – January 2022

HerdDogg, Inc. was founded in 2015 to improve livestock management. The agricultural industry had already moved towards the use of tags to track animal location, temperature, methane productions and more. HerdDogg set out to improve these systems to provide a low-cost, high-quality data collection and monitoring system. They started by combining tags and bluetooth-to-cellular technology, creating their DoggTags and DoggBone Bluetooth technology.

Recently, they have expanded their technology’s capabilities by introducing tag-based administration of medicine and pharmaceuticals. The tag has been redesigned to include a reservoir where a pharmaceutical can be held. One example might be an insecticide meant to reduce the presence of annoying or harmful insects like mosquitoes or ticks. An actuator in the tag can be triggered to release the pharmaceutical when needed. Depending on the medicine, the compound can be applied topically or injected as needed (eg. dermal, muscular, IV injection).

A controlled amount of the substance is administered by ensuring the reservoir has precise volumes. The tag can also have multiple reservoirs if an animal needs different medications or multiple doses throughout the day. For instance, a first dose of an insecticide can be administered. Normal monitoring continues, where the animal behavior is tracked. If the animal continues to express discomfort and agitation, a second dose can be administered.

HerdDogg has worked to ensure these solutions scale across farms of all sizes, using cloud-based data analytics to better manage the livestock.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
