Oregon Patent of the Month – June 2022

While wind power offers a convenient renewable energy source, it faces key limitations. Wind is not constant, and is therefore deemed unreliable by some. The currently available designs for wind turbines are also difficult to scale and not always viable at local levels.

EiP Technologies, Inc. is focused on making renewable energy a viable option for anyone. Most renewable energy sources have been critiqued for their transmission losses, meaning energy generated cannot travel too far from its source. Since our energy grid has been built on the transfer of energy across large grids from single sources, it can be hard to understand how a switch to renewable energy would be possible.

EiP Technologies has developed a new method for direct wind energy generation which solves two problems at once. This method can generate reliable wind energy at a local level, a viable solution for a microgrid. With this design, all power is consumed right in the communities where it is generated, virtually eliminating transmission losses.

Their wind generator has just one moving part. Shaped like a cylinder, the cage directs any turbulent or gusty winds into internal blades. The blades are positioned on top of a slowly rotating heavy flywheel which is surrounded by magnets and inductors. Between the magnets, inductors, and high-speed switch-mode electronics, wind energy is converted directly into energy in the form of constant regulated DC voltage. The system can connect directly to a building power panel, providing energy with ease. With just one moving part and no chemicals or toxic materials, the machine has no risk of sparking or catching fire.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
