Oregon Patent of the Month – June 2025

A new cannabis cultivar developed by Phylos Bioscience Inc. promises to reshape expectations for hemp flower production. U.S. Patent No. PP36761, titled ‘Cannabis plant named ‘PTC8506V’, covers a novel plant variety bred specifically for its compact structure, early flowering, and consistent cannabinoid profile.

Built for performance in hemp cultivation

Unlike many commercial cannabis varieties, PTC8506V exhibits strong apical dominance and uniform plant height, making it highly desirable for field production. Its structure allows for more efficient harvesting and trimming, reducing labor costs for growers.

The plant also boasts a notably early flowering period, triggered under long-day conditions, giving farmers more control over harvest timing. This trait reduces risk from unpredictable weather and shortens the path from seed to shelf-an essential edge in competitive hemp markets.

Stable genetics, consistent results

PTC8506V was developed through controlled pollination and extensive selection, resulting in a clonal variety that delivers uniform traits across all plants. According to the patent, this includes tight bud formation, limited lateral branching, and a green foliage profile with reddish tints during late flower stages.

For processors and manufacturers, this consistency in both structure and chemical composition translates to more reliable input material for CBD extraction or smokable hemp production.

Oregon-grown innovation

This latest development highlights Oregon’s leadership in cannabis R&D and showcases how strategic breeding can address real-world cultivation challenges. As demand grows for efficient, scalable hemp solutions, PTC8506V reflects a clear move toward innovation-driven plant science.
