Pennsylvania Patent of the Month – August 2021

Toothpaste is held to a strict standard in order to meet USDA organic requirements. The formula needs to meet an acceptable consistency, shelf life, and taste. While meeting all of these standards, they must also provide sufficient abrasion without going overboard in order to clean out debris and plaque without harming the teeth or gums. In order to be certified organic by the USDA, the National Organic Standards Board (NOSE) helps verify the product meets all regulations. Radius Corporation has developed a certified organic toothpaste that meets all requirements including 95% by weight organic material and no more than 5% non-organic material.

Their formulation uses a pickering emulsion with a continuous and dispersed phase. These two phases have an interface between them which helps to stabilize the emulsion. One of the most difficult aspects of formulating organic toothpaste is achieving the necessary viscosity to hold it’s shape when squeezed onto a toothbrush. This viscosity must be maintained across the entire shelf life. The two phases of the pickering emulsion help achieve and maintain this viscosity by preventing separation. The continuous phase is formed from water, while the dispersed phase is formed from oil. The water phase is mixed with erythritol and rice powder then combined with thickening components. The discontinuous phase is combined with glycerin. This formulation produces the necessary viscosity, foam and bacterial protection with nearly entirely organic ingredients.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
