Phoenix, Arizona Patent of the Year – 2024/2025

International Isotopes Inc. has been awarded the 2024/2025 Patent of the Year for their innovative capsule filling system for radioactive materials. Their invention, detailed in U.S. Patent Application No. 20240423875, titled ‘Systems and methods for loading capsules with radioactive materials for pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and/or other purposes’, utilizes a remotely operated, partially or fully automated system to safely and efficiently transfer radioactive solutions into capsules for medical and diagnostic use.

The system features a rotatable carousel that holds transport containers, a needle assembly for precise dosing, and a robotic gripper to handle capsules. A controller orchestrates the entire process, from drawing a dose from a source container to sealing the filled capsule. This automation minimizes human exposure to radiation and enhances the consistency of capsule preparation.

Designed to handle isotopes like Iodine-131, the system’s modular components, including a movable support assembly and capsule capping mechanism, allow for adaptability across various pharmaceutical applications. By integrating these features, the technology addresses critical safety and efficiency challenges in the handling of radioactive materials.

This advancement reflects a significant step forward in nuclear medicine manufacturing. It offers a scalable solution that could streamline the production of radiopharmaceuticals, ensuring better protection for workers and consistent quality for patients.
