Los Angeles, California Patent of the Year – 2024/2025

Black Light Surgical Inc. and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has been awarded the 2024/2025 Patent of the Year for their innovation in real-time tissue diagnostics. Their invention, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 12025557, titled ‘Systems, devices, and methods for time-resolved fluorescent spectroscopy’, employs time-resolved fluorescent spectroscopy to analyze biological tissues both in vivo and ex vivo.

This technology utilizes a light source to emit pulses that excite the tissue, inducing a fluorescent response. A demultiplexer then splits this signal into multiple spectral bands, each delayed in time, allowing a detector to capture comprehensive data from a single excitation pulse. By analyzing the intensity and decay of these spectral bands, the system can characterize the tissue’s properties in real-time.

The device features a two-piece probe design with a detachable, disposable distal end, enhancing hygiene and ease of use. It can be integrated with other optical spectroscopy or imaging modalities, providing a versatile tool for medical diagnostics.

Clinically, this advancement holds promise for improving the accuracy of tissue characterization during surgical procedures, potentially aiding in the detection of abnormalities such as tumors. Its real-time analysis capability could lead to more informed decision-making in the operating room, enhancing patient outcomes.

The development of this technology underscores the potential of combining advanced spectroscopy with practical medical applications, marking a significant step forward in diagnostic methodologies.
