Decatur, Illinois Patent of the Year – 2024/2025

Sullivan Donald N. has been awarded the 2024/2025 Patent of the Year for his innovative hinged articulating spacer system for revision knee arthroplasty. Their invention, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 11857424, titled ‘Hinged articulating spacer system for revision knee arthroplasty’, introduces a modular, antibiotic-impregnated implant that improves joint stability and infection control during complex knee revision surgeries.

The system features a femur rod and a tibia rod connected by a hinge, allowing natural joint movement. Both rods are encased in pre-formed spacers made from bone cement infused with antibiotics like gentamicin. This design maintains mobility while delivering localized infection treatment.

Unlike traditional static spacers, Sullivan’s device offers dynamic articulation, reducing patient discomfort and aiding in rehabilitation. The modular components can be customized to fit individual anatomies, enhancing surgical outcomes.

This advancement addresses the challenges of infection management and joint function preservation in revision knee surgeries. By combining mechanical stability with targeted antibiotic delivery, the system represents a significant leap forward in orthopedic care.
