Southfield, Michigan Patent of the Year – 2024/2025

Intecells Inc. has been awarded the 2024/2025 Patent of the Year for innovation in lithium-ion battery manufacturing. Their invention, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 11996540, titled ‘Method and apparatus for making lithium ion battery electrodes’, introduces a faster, more energy-efficient process for producing battery electrodes.

The new method eliminates the need for traditional drying ovens, which are costly, slow, and energy-intensive. Instead, Intecells uses a dry deposition process that forms battery electrodes directly onto a current collector. This not only reduces manufacturing time and carbon footprint but also cuts production costs significantly.

The invention enables more precise control over electrode thickness and composition. That translates to higher performance and greater reliability in lithium-ion batteries. Because the process is also scalable, it could speed up the rollout of batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones, grid storage, and other high-demand applications.

By solving one of the most expensive bottlenecks in battery manufacturing, Intecells has positioned itself at the forefront of clean energy innovation. This technology has the potential to lower barriers for widespread adoption of energy storage systems. It represents a major leap toward more sustainable and accessible battery production worldwide.
