Jackson, Mississippi Patent of the Year – 2024/2025

A.L.M. Holding Co. and Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions Inc. has been awarded the 2024/2025 Patent of the Year for innovation in sustainable road construction. Their invention, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 11912874, titled ‘Crude sterol as an additive in asphalt binder’, introduces a plant-based solution to enhance asphalt performance.

This groundbreaking technology uses crude sterol, a naturally derived compound, to improve the flexibility and durability of asphalt binder. When added to paving materials, the sterol additive reduces cracking and extends the lifespan of roads in harsh climates.

Unlike conventional additives, crude sterol is renewable and less reliant on petroleum-based inputs. Its use can lower environmental impact while maintaining or enhancing road quality. The approach supports greener infrastructure and aligns with growing efforts to make construction more sustainable.

The patent also outlines methods for blending and applying the sterol-based additive in existing asphalt workflows. This makes it easier for road builders to adopt the technology without overhauling current equipment or supply chains.

With millions of miles of roads needing repair across the U.S., this innovation offers a timely and eco-conscious improvement. A.L.M. Holding Co. and Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions Inc. have opened the door to a more resilient and sustainable future for transportation infrastructure.
