Buffalo, New York Patent of the Year – 2024/2025

Efferent Labs Inc. has been awarded the 2024/2025 Patent of the Year for its breakthrough in real-time, in vivo biosensing. Their invention, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 11877866, titled ‘Implantable apparatus for sensing biologic signals’, introduces a miniaturized device that uses living cells to monitor physiological changes inside the body.

This implantable system features a sample chamber containing live, treated cells that fluoresce when exposed to specific light wavelengths. An integrated optical sensor emits excitation light and detects the resulting fluorescence, which reflects the body’s biochemical environment. The device includes a signal processor that interprets these signals and can transmit data wirelessly, enabling continuous monitoring without the need for invasive procedures.

By maintaining fluid communication between the implanted cells and the host organism, the apparatus ensures accurate, real-time readings of biological signals. Its design addresses challenges like minimizing interference from ambient light and protecting sensitive components from bodily fluids, enhancing both reliability and patient safety.

Efferent Labs’ innovation offers a significant advancement in medical diagnostics, providing clinicians with a powerful tool for monitoring chronic conditions and assessing treatment efficacy. This technology has the potential to transform patient care by enabling timely interventions based on precise, real-time data.
