Rhode Island Patent of the Month – September 2021
Certain varieties of cannabis are considered “autoflowering” which means the switch from a vegetative growth stage to a flowering stage based on age rather than length-of-day. These were beneficial to some farmers as they are adapted to colder climates and rougher soils, but also produced lower THC levels. More modern varieties of autoflowering cannabis have been bred to include higher THC levels with high growth rates. However, these new varieties require higher light exposure which can dehydrage and degrade the plant. Blazing Bits, LLC has been developing a system to nurture these plants without the drawbacks commonly seen.
Blazing Bits has developed a high-growth system for autoflowering cannabis which provides optimal growing conditions and high concentrations of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Their system uses a cocoon-like growth chamber with walls equipped with air intake and exhaust ports. The intake port has an anti-pest mesh filter while the outtake port has a carbon-based filter. The interior has a full light array with LEDs shining from the top to the bottom. The LEDs used produce light within the PAR ranges (430-652 nm). Fans create airflow throughout the chamber. The plant is placed in the chamber in a Low Stress Training, self pruning cloth pot. Light intensity is controlled to concentrate on “A”-type light which helps select for chlorophyll absorption peaks. The system helps deliver the correct type and quantity of light while ensuring the plant remains hydrated and well pruned.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
