South Carolina Patent of the Month – February 2021

Medical research is constantly reimagining how to repair and replace tissue.Typically mesh implants are used to support and encourage tissue growth. These implants can be made of synthetic or biologic material. A popular type of mesh derived from biologic material is acellular dermal matrix (ADM). ADM has been used in oral surgery as well as external applications such as burn reconstruction, and even internal applications, such as pelvic floor reconstruction. The results can vary widely from positive to negative depending on the application and the patient. ADM can also be very expensive, costing up to $5,000 per piece. So, Poly-Med, Inc. sought to develop a method of making a multi-layer implant device  from a lower cost synthetic mesh.

Poly-Med’s bioabsorbable mesh implant is designed to mimic the properties of biological mesh, in both structure and function. The majority of the material is synthetic with a small amount of natural elements. The device has two layers of fibrous material, each with different fibre diameter and adhesion properties. The first layer is connected to a base layer; but the second layer is only connected to the first layer, not the base. The device can be used for tissue reconstruction and replacement similar to ADM and other medical mesh implants.

Are you developing new materials or manufacturing methods? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
