South Carolina Patent of the Month – September 2022

Solar energy has become an increasingly popular way to save costs on electricity. Interestingly, it is also a great way to store electricity for critical installations related to government or defense. In the case of a nuclear or electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack, which is characterized by intense waves of heat and light, these sites can be immediately destroyed unless an adequate power supply is maintained.

Typical Solar Thermal Energy Collector (STEC) systems are fragile and not equipped to handle an EMP attack as they are sensitive to damage. In addition, they often incorporate tracking mechanisms which are considered vulnerable in the nuclear and post-nuclear attack environment. Furthermore, they are usually mounted above ground, making them susceptible to damage and destruction by high winds or thermal pulses.

Renewable Energy Aggregators, Inc. understands the unique challenges of a nuclear or EMP attack. They strive to equip governing properties with a full-proof STEC system to adequately store energy in a vulnerable situation. It is located beneath ground level and is composed of collection tubes that have a radiation collection surface at the top and a supporting tray at the bottom, all housed within an insulated material. An underground geothermal storage unit is securely coupled to the collection tubes. The system is shielded by aluminum or steel to resist corrosion and incorporates blast valves and filters to prevent damage from high temperatures and debris. This STEC system is EMP-protected according to government standards, making this an ideal solution for all critical equipment to continue working smoothly, even in the most dangerous situations.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
