South Dakota Patent of the Month – June 2021

Hospital patients quickly become familiar with gurneys, as they are transferred from room to room. These gurneys can be cumbersome and still require transferring the patient from one bed to another. CEGA Innovations has created a new, inflatable patient transfer system designed to improve patient care.

They have designed a transport system made of two detachable, inflatable sections. The device is first positioned beneath the patient in a deflated state. This is set up before the patient undergoes whichever procedure they are there for. Once the procedure is completed and the patient is ready for transfer, the device can be inflated with the patient on top of it. The inflation is done evenly and with enough airflow to lift the patient slightly. The device has straps to help secure the patient as needed and handles for the caregivers to grasp. They can then transfer the patient to the next bed without rolling their torso or moving their body significantly. As they are laid down on the new bed, the device can be deflated. If the transfer device is no longer needed, the two sections can be pulled, detaching and sliding out from under the patient. The material of the device is solid and easily sterilized for reuse. Patient transfer can be incredibly important, as patients may be in danger of exacerbating an injury prior to or just after a surgery, so improving this system is integral to patient care.
