South Dakota Patent of the Month – May 2025
PRAIRIE AQUATECH LLC has been granted U.S. Patent No. 12310384, titled ‘Microbial-based process for high quality protein concentrate’. The patent covers a novel fermentation process that transforms soy-based material into a high-protein aquaculture feed, offering a sustainable alternative to fish meal.
This microbial process could significantly reduce aquaculture’s reliance on marine resources. It converts soybean feedstock into a concentrated protein product using selected microbes under aerobic conditions. The result: a nutrient-rich, plant-based protein suitable for large-scale fish farming.
Efficient, High-Quality Protein
The patented process yields a protein concentrate with over 61% protein on a dry matter basis. It also produces a syrup containing soluble protein and fiber, along with microbial gum. These byproducts improve pellet quality and may help support fish immune systems.
Sustainability Meets Scale
Replacing fish meal with this protein reduces environmental pressure on marine ecosystems. The method uses widely available soy-based inputs, making it both cost-effective and scalable. Feed trials show that fish consuming this product grow faster and convert feed more efficiently.
Commercial Impact
PRAIRIE AQUATECH LLC has commercialized this innovation through its ME-PRO® brand. Its Brookings, South Dakota facility produces up to 30,000 tons per year, providing a reliable, traceable source of aquafeed protein for global markets.
