Tennessee Patent of the Month – February 2021

Hyper or multispectral spectroscopy is an imaging technique that integrates multiple images of an object into a single data structure. The initial images are taken at different wavelengths or spectral bands. The final product is called a 3D hyperspectral data cube. This technique is used in a variety of industries, including the medical field. It provides a method to identify an individual component of an otherwise complex composition. It can be used to determine tissue oxygenation, which is when oxygen enters tissue cells. Typical methods for determining tissue oxygenation with hyperspectral spectroscopy require either visible light – which needs more processing power – or infrared light – which provides inaccurate data. HyperMed Imaging, Inc. has been designing a system to remove these limitations and produce accurate tissue oxygenation data with ease.

The process involves obtaining first and second spectral image datasets of the region of interest (ROI). The two datasets are composed of separate spectral ranges (visible and infrared light), and an image is taken with each spectral band within each range. A processor then analyzes each spectral image dataset, first separately and then together, and determines absorption values of oxygen within the tissue. This process utilizes both visible and infrared light to quickly obtain comprehensive tissue oxygenation data.

About HyperMed Imaging

Are you redesigning existing technology? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
