Tennessee Patent of the Month – February 2025

TechMah Medical LLC has introduced a groundbreaking method that could redefine joint replacement surgery. The company’s new invention focuses on increasing precision during orthopedic procedures by using bone-mounted trackers equipped with inertial measurement units (IMUs). These trackers provide real-time data on the position and orientation of bones, enabling highly accurate surgical planning and execution.

The method begins by securing trackers to the bones forming the joint—such as the tibia and talus in ankle replacements. These trackers feed dynamic data to a system that registers bone positions against 3D virtual models created from pre-operative imaging. This allows for personalized cutting guides to be attached and used with pinpoint accuracy.

A standout feature of the system is its ability to adjust the bones into a desired alignment before cutting, locking them in place with bone pins. It also supports augmented reality overlays and advanced surgical navigation tools, helping surgeons visualize each step of the operation in context.

But what truly sets TechMah’s invention apart is its use of dynamic imaging data—like fluoroscopy—to inform implant design. The process doesn’t just fit an implant to the current anatomy, it models natural joint movement to craft implants that work in harmony with real-life biomechanics.

With this innovation, TechMah Medical is blending surgical precision with smart technology, making joint replacements more adaptive, less invasive, and potentially longer lasting. It’s a major leap forward in patient-specific orthopedic care, promising better outcomes and quicker recoveries.
