Tennessee Patent of the Month – June 2021

Humidity controlling breathers work by expanded liquids and gases in a liquid reservoir. This system is also supposed to prevent contamination of the liquid. As such, they are meant to be replaced on schedule and often use color changing desiccants to help indicate when change is needed. However, these desiccants have limitations. Color changing desiccants require transparent breather housings – which is an issue as opaque housings are more effective. Some desiccants produce weak color changes which makes it difficult to interpret them. Des-Case Corp. has designed an improved breather with an electronic detection system.

Their breather uses an electronic end of life detection system to track the end of life of the desiccants. With the use of a temperature and humidity sensor, the system can track the temp and humidity levels of the desiccant and delivers this information to the controller. The controller uses this to calculate the relative humidity. When this calculation shows a relative humidity that surpasses a threshold (eg. 40%) the system indicates that it is time to replace the breather. This end of life detection system provides a more reliable and accurate notification feature, rather than relying on a user remembering to check if the color has changed.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
