Texas Patent of the Month – August 2021
R2Sonic, LLC has developed a hyperspectral sonar system to help in bottom and water column characterization. Hyperspectral sonar uses a variety of different transmit waveforms, beamforms, and post-processing methods to acquire data across a broad spectrum of frequencies. Traditional sonar surveys such as bathymetric surveys are reliant on preemptive knowledge on which frequencies are needed. The survey is then conducted with a set frequency and analyzed after. This limits the effectiveness of studies as researchers must perform surveys every time they need information in a new frequency.
This hyperspectral sonar system uses a vertical survey system with multibeam echo sounder systems. The device allows comparison of band pass filter outputs, assessing the strength of echo returns at particular frequencies. A signal generator constructs a message which is delivered to the amplifier and projector. The returns are picked up by a hydrophone and processed. This type of analysis allows researchers to select and evaluate a range of frequencies of interest even after the survey is completed, providing more detailed research capabilities without requiring numerous surveys.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
