Texas Patent of the Month – March 2025

MedCognetics has received U.S. Patent No. 12,243,232, titled “Racially unbiased deep learning-based mammogram analyzer.” The patented technology uses artificial intelligence to improve breast cancer detection across diverse racial groups. It aims to reduce healthcare disparities by offering more accurate results for underrepresented populations.

AI That Adapts to Everyone

Unlike many existing systems, this AI doesn’t rely on one-size-fits-all data. Instead, it adjusts its analysis using race-specific layers trained on a wide variety of mammogram images. As a result, the system offers more balanced performance for all patients, regardless of background.

This is especially important in medical imaging. Traditionally, diagnostic tools have shown reduced accuracy in populations that were not well represented in training data. By designing an AI that accounts for this, MedCognetics is working to close the diagnostic gap.

A Step Toward Fairer Healthcare

The company’s invention could lead to earlier and more accurate breast cancer detection, especially for communities that have long been overlooked. Moreover, the technology is designed for easy integration into existing healthcare systems, which could speed up its real-world use.

Looking ahead, MedCognetics plans to expand partnerships with hospitals and research centers. With this patent, the company is paving the way for more equitable outcomes in cancer care.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
