Utah Patent of the Month – April 2025

A new invention from SymbioCellTech, LLC could change how scientists build biological tissues. The company has secured a U.S. patent for a technique that enables living cells to self-assemble into three-dimensional structures—without the need for synthetic scaffolds.

The patent, titled “Self-assembling multicellular bodies and methods of producing a three-dimensional biological structure using the same” (U.S. Patent No. 12,281,330), outlines a process for creating cell-based materials that form stable structures by themselves. These structures can then be fused into more complex, tissue-like systems.

Engineering Tissues from the Ground Up

The method begins with a paste made of viable cells. This paste is molded into a desired shape and incubated under specific conditions. Over time, the cells bind and form a structure that can support its own weight. Once solidified, these biological units can be combined to build larger, functional tissue constructs.

Practical Applications in Regenerative Medicine

This approach could offer more natural alternatives to traditional scaffold-based tissue engineering. The ability to produce tissue structures entirely from living cells may reduce complications in medical applications and accelerate the development of organ and tissue models for research.

By providing a new method of shaping living material, SymbioCellTech positions itself at the forefront of regenerative biotechnology.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
