Utah Patent of the Month – December 2021

Wide-angle cameras often produce small distortions around the edges of the image. Panoramic shots provide an acceptable solution by assembling multiple pictures together to create one “wide-angle” shot. However, properly aligning these series of pictures can be difficult, producing some pretty distorted images. Really Right Stuff, LLC has developed a panoramic camera support that aims to simplify and improve panoramic images.

Really Right Stuff has been developing and improving on products since 1990 from tripods to ball heads to quick-release plates. Their products are hand-assembled to achieve the optimal fabrication each time.

Their panoramic camera support is no different. They identified a problem in the photography world and have come up with an effective solution. Their support consists of a gimbal device and panoramic clamp. The support can be attached to a tripod and offers rotation in both vertical and horizontal planes. A level is also incorporated so that the user can ensure the camera is positioned correctly and remains level as it rotates. Most importantly, the vertical arm can shift laterally to allow the optical center of any lens to be positioned precisely at the panning axis of rotation. This means, no matter which camera is used, the images taken will create a seamless panoramic shot.
