Utah Patent of the Month – June 2022

The sun and the moon’s gravitational pull on the Earth’s bodies of water have inspired Big Moon Power, Inc. to create a new solution for clean, renewable, and reliable energy. Tidal Energy is a revolutionary means of efficiently harnessing the immense natural power that flows across our planet’s oceans. Central to the company’s technology is their water acceleration technology, which doubles the speed of ambient water to the Kinetic Wheel. This means their technology can operate at water speeds that are too slow for other technologies.

The company has recently patented their hydro-based electric power generation system, including their water accelerator. Their system can be placed in nearly any body of water as long as the water is continuously flowing. The low impact system generates electrical power from the combination of kinetic, hydrostatic, and turbulent energy of water.

Hydrostatic energy is the potential and pressure energy built up on the front of the device. Kinetic energy is the velocity and turbulent energy in the moving water which acts on an energy conversion device.

A baffle member has multiple openings for water to flow through. A hydropower converter is positioned behind this baffle and coupled to a generator. Water flowing through the baffle has an increased velocity compared to the ambient current, therefore generating more power relative to the ambient water.

Other attempts at harnessing this source of energy have blocked the flow of an entire body of water. Think like a hydroelectric dam. Big Moon Power’s design does not block the flow, but rather takes advantage of it. The use of the hydropower converter and the flowing water generates more electricity than a traditional system.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
