Utah Patent of the Month – March 2022

It’s not unusual for a mountain climber to have to leave behind carabiners. If they can’t complete a climb, the climber would have to repel down the wall. Once on the ground, they simply can’t retrieve the carabiner which is positioned further up the climb. This is unfortunate in terms of environmental footprint and costs associated with the hobby. DC Mountaineering, LCC knows this woe and has designed a tool to retrieve carabiners whether you’re in the middle of a climb or at the bottom of the mountain.

Their device attaches to the gate of any traditional carabiner. A retrieval cord retention structure is then positioned at this gate. When pulled in a specific direction, the gate opens up, loosing the carabiner. This force then passes the device through the gate opening on the carabiner. The climber can then pull the actual climbing rope, pulling the carabiner out with it.

With this design, climbers can ensure they always clean their path, removing all equipment from the mountainside even when they can’t finisht their route.
