Utah Patent of the Month – May 2021

Buildings have numerous controls aimed at optimizing the comfort of it’s occupants such as centralized air, heating, ventilation, climate, security, entertainment and so on. A building with multiple occupants might have multiple sets of these controls – like apartment buildings. PassiveLogic has designed an improved building comfort management system.

Their solution uses an automated control system to estimate individual occupant comfort levels. Based on these estimates, the system controls features of the building, increasing the heat or engaging the security system as needed with the goal of meeting the comfort levels of all occupants as best as possible. In order to effectively do so, the system uses occupant proxy models. Each proxy models the comfort of the individual occupant they represent. Then a meta-proxy represents the comfort of all the occupants. The occupants can provide comfort input through an interface, and the system utilizes a complex averaging algorithm to create the optimal comfort conditions. This system intelligently generates control sequences in real-time, using input from users to guide future automated decisions.
