Vermont Patent of the Month – March 2022

A cup anemometer is used as a wind speed indicator and usually consists of three or four hemispherical cups mounted at the ends of horizontal spokes which rotates about a low-friction vertical shaft. The design of the rotor has a major impact on the accuracy of the wind speed measurement. NRG Systems, Inc. has designed a single piece rotor for a cup anemometer which improves this accuracy.

The cup anemometer is not only more accurate but also more cost effective than traditional designs. Their single-piece molded rotor is assembled to the shaft using a cap. This provides symmetry in the area of the cups and arms of the rotor. The wind hits the cups causing the rotor and shaft to spin. A transducer converts this to a signal representation of the speed of the wind. The cups are conical and positioned with approximately 114 degree angles from each other. These design features contribute to the anemometer’s accurate performance and ease of manufacturing.

NRG Systems, Inc. have been innovating sustainable technologies for over 40 years. They design and manufacture a range of smart technologies to contribute to more renewable energy, cleaner air, and a safer environment overall.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
