Virginia Patent of the Month – August 2022

Our bodies often fight ailments with fevers to try and burn out the infection or sickness. This was an incredibly common symptom for those afflicted with COVID-19 and, as such, many stores and event centers implemented temperature checks upon entry. However, this proved to be quite a nuisance for many of those people who naturally run warmer. It also showed a true limitation, as some individuals who run cold may have a fever without passing the implemented threshold of 100.4°F.

A healthy body temperature will vary person by person for many reasons including body weight, age, metabolism, and so on. Since these measurements are so variable, the fever temperature – which is simply a higher than normal body temperature – is also variable. The average temperature of 100.4°F is simply insufficient for most of the population.

Ideal Innovations, Inc. designed a method of determining a Personal Warning Temperature (PWT) to prevent these problems. By creating an individualized warning temperature, a more accurate warning can be garnered that considers the person’s natural body temperature. This way somebody who is naturally warmer is not considered to have a fever at their natural temperature, nor will a truly sick person who runs cold slip by.

The PWT is determined by first taking measurements when they are healthy. If desired, these measurements can be taken multiple times throughout the day to account for the variation from morning to evening. An average of these measurements is used to determine a reliable body temperature. A few degrees above this temperature then marks the PWT. If a measurement meets or exceeds the PWT, the individual will know they have an actual fever and may be getting sick. If every person knew their personal warning temperature and monitored their body temperature daily, we would be in a much better position to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, and perhaps future pandemics.
