Virginia Patent of the Month – February 2025

A breakthrough in random number generation has emerged from QWERX, offering a novel system that harnesses quantum events to produce truly unpredictable numbers—a critical advancement for cryptography, cybersecurity, and scientific simulations. Unlike conventional pseudo-random generators, which rely on mathematical algorithms, or hardware-based solutions vulnerable to bias, this invention taps into the inherent randomness of quantum phenomena, such as radioactive decay or photon detection, to generate digits with unparalleled security.

At the heart of the system is a quantum event detector that captures unpredictable occurrences—like a single photon emission—while a separate circuit continuously loops through a sequence of counts. When a quantum event happens, the system records the count at that exact moment, converting it into a random digit. By stringing together multiple such events, the technology can produce multi-digit numbers in any base, from standard base-10 to specialized formats. Crucially, the looping counter operates independently, ensuring no external influence skews the results.

The implications are vast. Cryptographic keys generated this way are virtually unhackable, as they derive from fundamentally random quantum behavior rather than deterministic processes. The system also sidesteps pitfalls of traditional hardware RNGs, which can falter under heavy demand. With applications ranging from secure authentication to financial modeling, QWERX’s innovation could redefine randomness in the digital age—offering a robust, scalable solution where true unpredictability is paramount.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
