Virginia Patent of the Month – March 2022

Breast milk contains all the nutrients a baby needs for the first six months of life. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy for a mother to breastfeed. Whether the baby struggles to latch or has a cleft palate, or some other reason comes into play, a baby still needs their nutrients. In some cases, the mother can pump and find alternative ways to feed their baby including bottle feeding. However, these pumps are usually large, noisy, and inconvenient.

Lansinoh Laboratories, Inc. has been working to help mothers, babies, and healthcare providers for over 35 years. With their expertise, they have developed a pump which is more discrete and comfortable. Their device is small enough that it fits comfortably within a bra and attaches to an electric pump using silicone tubes. This positioning allows the pump to be hands free while the vacuum reservoir forms a seal and begins pumping.

To operate, the user compresses the silicone half dome and presses it against the breast. Releasing the compression creates this vacuum seal. This suction force then expresses milk from the breast and pulls it into the collecting container through a one-way valve which ensures less spillage. Their device is designed to be quieter, portable, and convenient . Its small size and anti-spill ensures there is no milk wasted.
