Virginia Patent of the Month – March 2025

Night vision cameras are crucial for security, but they often trigger false alarms due to poor lighting or environmental noise. ObjectVideo Labs aims to solve this with a new AI-powered approach. Their innovation, detailed in U.S. Patent No. 12,248,535 titled “Reducing false detections for night vision cameras,” enhances object detection accuracy in low-light conditions.

Adaptive Neural Networks for Low-Light Accuracy

The patented system employs a neural network trained to distinguish between multiple object types. It uses feature vectors from training images and compares the network’s output with ground truth data to adjust its weights. This iterative learning process enables the classifier to better identify objects in challenging lighting, reducing false positives.

Real-World Impact on Security Operations

By improving detection accuracy, this technology can significantly reduce false alarms in security systems. This advancement not only enhances safety but also optimizes resource allocation for security personnel. The approach could be integrated into existing surveillance infrastructures, offering a practical solution for industries reliant on night vision technology.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
