Virginia Patent of the Month – October 2022
When a blood vessel gets injured, the body goes through a process of blood clot formation and dissolution. This hemostatic process prevents excessive bleeding by ensuring the wound quickly scabs over and blocks the exit. This process is crucial to the body’s self regulation of injuries. Defects in this process play a part in some of our most fatal conditions – stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolisms and so on. HemoSonics, LLC has developed a series of tools designed to help identify these defects, predicting potential conditions.
HemoSonics, a medical equipment manufacturer, has focused their expertise on developing the clinical tools needed to improve the medical management of coagulation dysfunctions. With improved diagnostics, managing uncontrolled bleeds becomes much simpler.
Their recently patented technology – a hemostatic parameter display – supports their diagnostic tool set. The tool displays a range of hemostatic indexes and communicates with the rest of the system. The indexes themselves are calculated from gathered data such as ultrasounds. The collected data processes the “stiffness” of blood based on viscosity and presence of platelets and coagulants. Tracking this data ensures that healthcare personnel can see a history of the patient’s hemostatic indexes, and how various treatments have impacted the blood. With in-depth insight, preventative treatments can more quickly be selected and implemented.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
