Washington Patent of the Month – April 2022

Nails are a fantastic way to pull an outfit together whether they’re professionally done, press-ons, or painted yourself. Going to a salon can add up in cost, but painting your own nails isn’t always easy. The founder of Preemadonna, Inc., Pree Walia, knows the dilemma of cost vs quality nails. They decided they shouldn’t need to choose and set out to develop a device capable of painting your nails for you.

Their device combines creative expression with interactive smart hardware to bring beautiful at-home manicures to the market. The system uses a series of sensors and motors to reliably and precisely paint the user’s fingernails. Imaging devices are used to detect the position of the fingernail to guide the motion of the applicator. The applicator is motor controlled and capable of precision movements so that it never goes outside the lines.

A set of built-in reservoirs are used to hold multiple different and interchangeable nail polish colors. Beyond a coating of nail polish, the device can print nail art for customizable and unique manicures. The nail art can include photos, emojis, or even self-created designs using nail safe ink. The built-in ink cartridge and printer can reproduce any image on the nail in 5 seconds. Inventions like this bring together technology and creativity in the best kind of way.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
